Our instructors are experienced players and certified chess tutors. They will provide individualised support to help your child improve their game and skills.

What I will learn?

  • In this course, you will learn how to play chess with confidence by mastering the rules, piece movement, and special abilities. You will discover how to start games strongly through opening principles, building a solid repertoire, and avoiding common traps. As the lessons progress, you will sharpen your tactical and strategic thinking by applying forks, pins, sacrifices, and key positional concepts such as space control, weak squares, and exchanges. You will also strengthen your defensive skills, learning how to counterattack, block threats, and save difficult positions using drawing techniques. Finally, you will gain practical endgame mastery, including pawn promotion, king activity, opposition, and rook endgames, while preparing to compete like a pro by following tournament rules, practising good etiquette, and analysing your own games for continuous improvement.

INTRODUCTION TO THE CHESSBOARD, CHESSMEN, PIECE CAPTURE AND CHECKMATE
Introduction to the Chessboard, Chessmen, Piece Capture, and Checkmate This lesson introduces the fundamentals of chess. The chessboard is an 8x8 grid with alternating light and dark squares. Each player starts with 16 chessmen: 1 King, 1 Queen, 2 Rooks, 2 Bishops, 2 Knights, and 8 Pawns, each with unique movement rules. Players aim to capture pieces by moving their own pieces to squares occupied by opponents'. The ultimate goal is to deliver checkmate, a position where the opponent’s King is under attack and cannot escape capture.

BASIC RULES AND SPECIAL MOVES IN CHESS
In this lesson, BAFs learn the basics of chess. The chessboard has 64 squares, arranged in 8 rows and 8 columns with black and white colours. Each player has chessmen; 1 King, 1 Queen, 2 Rooks, 2 Bishops, 2 Knights, and 8 Pawns. Each piece moves in a special way. Players can capture the opponent’s pieces by landing on their square. The aim of the game is to checkmate the other player’s King—this means the King is trapped and cannot escape!

OPENING PRINCIPLES / CHESS NOTATION
This lesson teaches BAFs how to start a chess game the right way and how to write down moves. The opening principles focus on controlling the centre, developing pieces early, and protecting the King. Chess notation helps players record and read chess moves using letters and numbers on the board.

BASIC TACTICS I
In this lesson, BAFs are introduced to simple but powerful tricks used in chess. These include tactics like the fork (attacking two pieces at once), pin (stopping a piece from moving because it would expose a more valuable piece), and skewer (forcing a valuable piece to move and exposing a weaker one behind it). These basic tactics help BAFs win material and gain an advantage during the game.

BASIC TACTICS II
This lesson continues with more chess tricks to help BAFs play smarter. BAFs learn about the discovered attack (when moving one piece reveals an attack from another), the double check (two pieces checking the King at once), and the removal of the guard (taking away the piece protecting another). These tactics help BAFs create clever attacks and spot hidden opportunities in the game.

CHECKMATE PATTERN I
In this lesson, BAFs learn simple and common ways to finish a game with checkmate. They are introduced to patterns like the Back Rank Mate (when the King is trapped behind its own pawns), and the Smothered Mate (when the King is surrounded by its own pieces and checked by a Knight). Recognising these patterns helps BAFs spot winning chances and avoid falling into traps.

CHECKMATE PATTERN II
This lesson teaches BAFs more advanced ways to checkmate. BAFs explore patterns like the Bishop and Queen Mate (working together to trap the King), the Rook Roller (using two Rooks to push the King back step-by-step), and the Arabian Mate (a classic checkmate using a Knight and Rook). These patterns help BAFs finish games confidently and spot checkmate chances faster.

STRATEGY I
In this lesson, BAFs are introduced to basic chess strategies that improve overall thinking and planning. They learn how to create strong positions, place their pieces on active squares, and understand the importance of pawn structure. Strategy I helps BAFs think ahead, not just about the next move, but about their plan for the whole game.

STRATEGY II
This lesson builds on earlier ideas and helps BAFs deepen their planning skills. BAFs learn about creating and using open files, placing outposts for Knights, and making weaknesses in the opponent’s camp. The lesson also introduces the idea of improving piece coordination. These strategies help BAFs build stronger positions and prepare for long-term success in the game.

TOURNAMENT READINESS
This lesson prepares BAFs for playing in real chess tournaments. They learn the basic rules of tournament play, how to use a chess clock, follow touch-move rules, and record their games with notation. BAFs also practise good sportsmanship, staying calm under pressure, and managing their time. This helps them feel confident and ready to compete in formal settings.

END GAME FUNDAMENTALS I
In this lesson, BAFs learn the basics of how to play the end of a chess game. They are taught how to use the King actively, and how to checkmate with a King and Rook vs King. The focus is on simple endings where there are only a few pieces left, helping BAFs understand how to turn a winning position into victory.

END GAME FUNDAMENTALS II
This lesson builds on earlier endgame skills. BAFs learn how to checkmate with a King and Queen vs King, and practise basic pawn endings, such as promoting a pawn with the help of their King. They also explore the idea of the opposition, a key endgame strategy. These skills help BAFs finish games confidently and accurately.

ADVANCED TACTICS I
In this lesson, BAFs explore deeper and more complex tactical ideas. They learn about combinations that involve sacrifices to gain a bigger advantage, the use of zwischenzug (an in-between move), and deflection (forcing a piece to leave its key duty). These advanced tactics help BAFs sharpen their calculation skills and spot clever winning moves during the game.

ADVANCED TACTICS II
This lesson continues to develop BAFs’ tactical strength with even more powerful ideas. BAFs learn tactics like interference (blocking a key line or square), overloading (when one piece is doing too many jobs), and clearance (moving a piece to open space for an attack). These advanced tactics help BAFs create sharp combinations and solve complex positions with confidence.

ADVANCED STRATEGY; POSITIONAL PLAY
In this lesson, BAFs learn to think beyond quick tactics and focus on long-term advantages. They explore positional play, which includes placing pieces on strong squares, creating pawn weaknesses in the opponent’s camp, and understanding space, structure, and piece activity. BAFs are taught how to build pressure slowly and make smart decisions based on the position, not just immediate threats.

OPENING PREPARATION
In this lesson, BAFs learn how to prepare for the beginning of a chess game with purpose. They study a few simple and reliable openings, understand their main ideas, and practise how to reach good positions after the first few moves. BAFs are also taught how to avoid traps, follow opening principles, and build their confidence by knowing what to expect in the early stage of the game.

DEFENSIVE TECHNIQUES
In this lesson, BAFs learn how to stay calm and defend well when under pressure. They explore ways to block attacks, protect key squares, and trade pieces wisely to reduce danger. Techniques like counterattack, defending with coordination, and creating escape squares for the King are also introduced. This helps BAFs become stronger, more balanced players who don’t give up easily.
